The fact is, Bagua has its own color preferences for all the elements. For example: Middle right and front right, both represent metal hence colors corresponding to metal can be used. Still, strict Feng Shui followers like to go by the Bagua preference of white and pastels in middle right and black, grey and white in front right.
The shade selection is also a matter of choice. Just make sure that you do not select a color that may contradict the energy of a particular region. For example: Rear Middle is Fire, you should not select colors of the Water element for this direction as it may affect the fire element.
